Sometimes you meet a beautiful butterfly, but sometimes...
Tibetan monks like to do things properly when it’s an offering or a ceremony.
When they lived in Tibet, or in Mustang (being this the case of this monastery) they made the ritual cakes for the offerings with tsampa, the roasted barley flour, and butter.
Here we are in a tropical environment, and the ritual cakes, which stay on the altar from one Tibetan new year to the next one, give life and space to a mini world.
The red flying cockroaches and the grain moths thrive with the tsampa.
And where there is a happy community of animals, the predator comes.
I had more or less an understanding with the cockroach living under one small water bowl. I was moving the lamp in the morning to put the water in and moving it again before sunset to take the water out.
He knew it and it was more or less ok. He was not going around the room, content with his space.
At the beginning I thought to throw him out, but the poor thing was staying under his lamp and was not harm. I thought: let’s face it, in the future I will live (possibly) even nearer to the jungle, better I get used. Plus, I have to work a little more on compassion, let’s share the room with him.
This is just a room: not the kitchen.
Then the day before yesterday the cockroach went nuts and flew on me. He was frantic, clutching crazily on my clothes and refusing to go away. I had to get out on the terrace and only there he accepted to leave my clothes.
Strange behavior... but I didn’t think about it much.
Until yesterday, when I found out why poor cockroach was so afraid!
I was quietly meditating in my room when I felt a strange something on my right foot.
It was a scolopendra around 12 cm (4,7 inch) long. The predator from whom the cockroach was frantically escaping.
I shouted and jumped, and she run away super fast.
After that I removed the bed, the carpet, everything! The bed weighs about a ton. I never moved it before.
And I found out a happy bunch of grain moth worms in the corners under the bed 😂, together with a lot of broken grains.
I calmed down (today I will ask the permission to vacuum the bedroom). And I thought about the scolopendra and my reaction.
In these days we are receiving teachings on the lower realms. Until now, we have reached the hungry ghosts realm.
Poor scolopendra is in the animal realm, I think we will study it tomorrow .
But she’s ugly and a little poisonous. She lives eating living creatures. Nobody likes her, she generates fear and disgust in whoever sees her.
Maybe in her past life she has been a beautiful, selfish person. Predating on others' feelings and happiness with no compassion.
And now she is trapped in that horrible body for who knows how long... because getting out from the lower realms is very difficult.
I have been flooded by compassion, and yesterday my meditation on the suffering of the lower realms has been vivid and deep.
After that I discovered that all the monks have a scolopendra in their rooms. It’s part of the thing. You pay attention and that’s it.
I was already peacefully sharing the room with the cockroach and a couple of huge spiders (one very hairy and the other one missing several legs) with the annoying habit of hiding in my clothes or in the big bathroom towel... I will learn to live with the scolopendra as well.
Finally she helped me with my practice 😉
But today I will clean under the bed... even if I have to break my poor back to move it. I don’t like dirty surroundings. Yesterday I put out the worms, so I can clean, no problem.
p.S. I keep on feeling tiny soft running legs on my skin and I keep on jumping. But I am confident I will overcome this 😂!
Incontri ravvicinati
In questi giorni stiamo ricevendo insegnamenti sui reami inferiori.
Bellissimo racconto
