This is not a strict retreat. I eat together with the monks and I receive teachings.
It’s the nature of this retreat.
Also, the meditation sessions are many and short, not like in the strict retreats, which have 4 sessions a day of two hours each. This is done to (hopefully!) reach a better level of concentration. And if you are tense your level of concentration decreases.
So I take it easy.
I call it my “detoxification from the West” retreat! :)
I wake up around 5:30 am and have a short meditation. Then I make the water and light offerings.
Usually the bowls for the water offerings are 7. But here they do it professionally! 19 bowls! And quite big ones!
Plus some of them are not in an easy to reach position... yesterday I almost burnt myself (I am quite clumsy early in the morning) with the butter lamp trying to fill a bowl! :)
At 7 we have breakfast.
At 8 teachings (when the abbot decides he wants to).
Then I do long prostrations* (few, about 50, because I have back pain).
Then my daily normal practice.
At 12 we have lunch
At 2 pm I start the meditations of the retreat...5 minutes. Stop. Another 15 minutes. Stop. Another 10 minutes... and so on.
4 pm tea break
Then again, meditations
Just before sunset I collect the water from the offering bowls and throw it in a clean place. Usually the neighbor’s vegetables garden :)
Then I relax and at 8pm or 8:30 I have the last bunch of meditations.
That’s my day, more or less. Every day it’s the same.
Well, sometimes the abbot is busy and we don’t have teachings and once in a while Lama Yonten Sangpo comes about my visa.
Lately I have the privilege, together with the two old monks, to receive teachings in the evening too. From a very respected practitioner and scholar who just completed a retreat.
At 8pm.
It was supposed to be half an hour...but yesterday he went on for one hour and a half! I was happy but deadly tired, couldn’t even sleep properly. With the wrong diet and so my body is a little naughty lately.
But it’s ok.
It’s such an awesome thing to be here, to receive teachings, to practice... a little purification now and again is just normal!
Long prostrations =. You think that in front of you there really are the three jewels: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
Standing, you touch your head, throat and heart with folded hands, reciting a prayer to take refuge. You deeply think that this practice will help you purifying your karma so to reach enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings.
Then keeping this in mind, you go down to lay on the floor. Arms in front of you, hands folded.
Rapidly, with the folded hands you touch the crown of your head. Then again you stretch your arm with folded hands on the floor in front of you and, rapidly, you get up. You repeat the whole process again and again. As much as you like.
I am permitting comments this time in case you want to ask something 😉
Ogni giorno è uguale all’altro.
Long prostrations: standing up rapidly ( or slowly) would be a problem for me.
Hugs for you and all the monks

Ciao Niki.
Grazie. Un abbraccio.
