In this world of fake people and words, "volunteer" has also changed meaning.
Once upon a time a volunteer was someone working for free for a charity.
Now they are people with handsome salaries, often working for big money-making organizations like UNICEF (98% of the donations going to "run the business").
So when people write to me comparing us to some money-making structure, I suppose they think I am getting a handsome salary.
Well, I am an old fashion volunteer. I am receiving no salary, and I pay for my living expenses.
The monastery gives me a room (with no heating and no warm water), water, and electricity. In exchange, I work all day long and I pay whenever need something for the children (and I have enough money for it). Extra food, vitamins, socks, colors, doctors, medicines, and so on. Nobody asks me to. It's just my way of living.
I have four pieces of luggage in my room and two boxes. Inside there are all my belongings: books, clothes, bedsheets, blankets....and, of course, a lot of things for the children.
How do I live given that I have no pension? With the saving of a life of hard work.
And I feel privileged because my life has meaning here.
Why I have written this post?
Because I think that it is important, in this world of lies and new hypocrisy, to clarify that I am an old fashion volunteer ;)
ITALIANO
Cibo extra, vitamine, calzini, colori, dottori, medicine e così via.
Excellent!
When it comes to Unicef more than 89% goes directly to the cause at hand, 2.9% goes to admin costs and 8% to fundraising costs.
